DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — Dorchester County officials say that as of 2:15 p.m., hazmat cleared the scene of a train derailment and a shelter-in-place has been lifted.
A portion of Highway 78 in Dorchester County is shut down after several train cars derailed near the KION North America plant Saturday morning.
Officials advise residents to stay away from the area while crews are still working on the scene.
“We want residents to remain away from the scene. That’s another reason deputies will be in the area of patrolling to make sure that there are not people attempting to see what’s going on. We all have that curiosity sense, but it really delays the process if there’s citizens trying to see what’s going on. So, we just encourage people to stay away from the area until it is clear and everything’s back open,” sheriff’s spokesman Steven Wright said.
Norfolk Southern said the train cars derailed at 9:50 a.m. Saturday. In response, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and first responders were called to 2450 West 5th North Street, or Highway 78.
“We have four different agencies on site. Probably 75 people working the scene in various functions, whether it be a command function, whether it be an operation function, whether it be somebody on a site visualizing what’s going on for safety measures,” Dorchester County Fire Rescue Fire Chief Tres Atkinson said.
Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter-in-place order also went into effect for all residents within a 1.5-mile radius of the scene.
“Dorchester County prides itself as being a proactive county government. We want to have all the resources necessary on the front lines in the event they are needed. We don’t want to be reacting in real time. And so these are all precautionary measures, proactive measures to safeguard and protect not only the citizens of Dorchester County, but the safety of the lives of those who are responding,” Wright said.
At around 2 p.m., Norfolk Southern began the cleanup process of the multiple cars that had derailed.
Norfolk Southern said a tank car was identified as carrying a chemical called chlorobenzene. The National Institutes of Health describes the chemical as “a colorless, flammable liquid with an aromatic almond-odor.”
However, officials said the tank car was empty at the time of the derailment.
No injuries were reported at the scene. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation by Norfolk Southern with the assistance of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.
Residents are being asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes. Officials say Highway 78 between Jedburg Road and Industrial Road is expected to be closed for an extended period.
